Import your data directly from MLS

Written by on August 5, 2014

Most appraisers still print their MLS sheet out, then spend about 20 minutes per report transcribing comparable data from their MLS into the forms. This is time-intensive, laborious, and error-prone.

Instead, use TOTAL's MLS Text Importer. This unique utility, which comes free as part of TOTAL, lets you easily configure TOTAL to be able to "read" the files that come from your MLS. After you set it up the first time, every other time it should only take you about one minute to complete the entire process.

Here's how it works (links are to more detailed instructions):

  1. Do your comp search normally on your MLS, and download the data as a text file or .CSV. This process is specific to each MLS, so if you're having trouble with this step you'll need to call your MLS for help; our technicians cannot help you with this step.
  2. Start the MLS text import utility from the Comps Side-by-side PowerView. Select (or create) your MLS from the list, then Browse to your downloaded file and select it.
  3. If you've already set up your MLS field mapping, click Next. If you're creating your MLS mapping template, select corresponding fields on each side, and click Match. Use the Clean Up button if necessary. Then, click Next.
  4. If all these comps are to go into the Sales Comparison grid, click Finish. If some are listings or rentals, choose the appropriate option in the drop-down.

Try this in TOTAL today.
